7 Things to Do Before a Long Weekend
With 2020 coming to an end, many are planning to travel out of town for the holidays. To ensure the safety of your home and property while away, follow these 7 tips from Plus Property.
Unplug All Devices Not in Use:
Unplug your TV, internet router, charging adapters, power strips and other devices not in use. Leaving devices plugged in can cause a short circuit, which may lead to fire. Certain appliances, however, may need to remain plugged in at all times, such as refrigerators.
Turn Off Water Valves: To reduce the chance of leaks from equipment or pipes while you are away, turn off all water valves. Ensure equipment and pipes are properly maintained and inspected regularly.
Properly Close All Windows and Doors: For lower-floor residents of condominiums, houses and townhouses, lock doors and windows and close curtains to prevent others from seeing inside of your unit.
Automate Lights: To throw off would-be intruders, automate lights using a timer or smart device. Lights can be left on in front of your property and garage to give the impression that someone is home. Intruders may hide outside of your residence, so it is a good idea to trim trees so that neighbours have a clear view and can monitor.
Inform the Juristic Person: Let the Juristic Person know when you will be away so that the guards can keep a close watch over your home. Leave a contact number, and in the case of an emergency, the Juristic Person will be able to contact right away.
Install CCTV Cameras and Motion Sensor Alarms: These devices can alert you or others of unusual activity in and around your property.
Don’t Broadcast Your Plans Online: Make sure your family members don’t either. By sharing travel plans, you’re advertising that “your house will be empty”. You can never be completely sure who sees that information, especially if you have many followers or a public profile.
