Follow this simple checklist to avoid the headache of relocating to a new home!

The process of moving to a new home can be a real hassle for anyone. Organising, boxing and transporting belongings to your new address is both time consuming and physically strenuous. We have created the following checklist to help make the relocation process as efficient and painless as possible.

1. Pick a Move Date

It is a good idea to fix a move date at least a month in advance to ensure that there is enough time to make preparations and complete all necessary paperwork. Once a specific date is decided on, contact any relevant agencies to inform them of the change to your address. Make sure to terminate utility services, such as waterworks, electricity, telephone, internet, etc. You will also need to get in contact with any financial institutions and subscription services to arrange for future documents and bills to be delivered to your new address.

2. Prepare All Necessary Equipment

Create a comprehensive list of items that you will be taking with you when moving. You will also need to organise any necessary equipment for packing and storage, which might include:

1. Boxes and Crates – Only use boxes and crates that are in good condition and strong enough to hold items. You may also need a range of sizes for different types of items.

2. Rope/String – Use rope or string to tie carpets into tidy rolls and to secure boxes to prevent them from opening during transportation. Rope can also serve as a handle for easy moving of objects.

3. Cushion Wrap/Newspaper – Use the appropriate form of wrapping for items, especially fragile objects, to prevent damage and scratches. The wrap should be thin enough to line the contours of objects. Cloth can also be used as a substitute.

4. Adhesive Tape – Seal lids of boxes with tape. Different coloured tape can be used to colour code boxes according to their contents. For example, red tape might be used to seal boxes containing fragile items and remind movers to be extra cautious when handling them.

5. Marker Pen – Use a pen to note down the contents of each box and/or the room in which the items belong. This will make it easier to retrieve items once you have arrived at your new address.

3. Pack Items Together That Belong in the Same Room

Once you have all of the necessary equipment, it is time to start packing. A good way to save time is to pack items based on the room in which they belong. Items that will end up in the same room should be packed together. A symbol or name can be written on the side of each box to indicate the room in which the contents will end up. This will make it much easier to find and organise items when unpacking.

4. Damage-Free Packing

The following techniques can be used to pack different items and prevent damage:

1. Dishes & Glassware – Wrap these in newspaper or cushion wrap to prevent breakage. Once wrapped, store these items within the same container, preferably a strong plastic crate that can be moved easily.

2. Clothes – Store these in plastic boxes or large plastic bags to keep out dust and dirt. Clothes that are seldom used can be sorted from those used routinely. Any items that are no longer needed can be placed into a separate container to be given away or donated. This will also help to thin an overcrowded closet.

3. Books – Pack books according to size. It is preferable to store books in wheeled crates or suitcases, as they can be extremely heavy.

4. Shoes – Place shoes in shoeboxes or together in a large box to prevent creasing. Avoid storing shoes together inside plastic bags, as the pressure can result in creases.

5. Electrical Appliances – Store electrical appliances inside of their original boxes. Alternatively, appliances can be disassembled and individual pieces wrapped with cushioning. To make reassembly simple, store all parts of individual appliances together. Be careful when moving appliances and avoid placing them sideways or tilting to prevent damage. If an appliance requires complicated wiring, take photographs to use as a reference during reassembly.

6. Mirrors & Fragile Items – Use several layers of cardboard or cushion wrap to cover especially fragile items. A thick blanket may also work for this. Place a “Fragile” warning on the box in an easily visible spot. Try to only keep mirrors in a horizontal position.

7. Furniture – For packing purposes, separate furniture that contains drawers or glass panels. If furniture has swing or sliding doors, secure these to the main body with rope or tape.

5. Loading Belongings into a Vehicle

Belongings can be moved to a new address with a personal vehicle or by employing a moving service. When loading items into the vehicle, start with large objects, like furniture, and work your way down to smaller items. This will allow for optimal utilisation of space and can prevent unnecessary trips, which can result in an inflated bill when hiring movers. Planning and maximising space usage during the loading process is crucial.

Relocation does not have to be a stressful process if you make the necessary plans ahead of time. The sooner you can fix a moving date, the more time you will have to prepare everything you need for the move. The above checklist should be useful to those who can set a fixed schedule and have time to prepare, as well as anyone who prefers to take care of things without outside help. For those who are short on time, professional movers can make the moving process a lot easier and less time-consuming.  Hiring movers will mean that you do not have to deal with things like cleaning, setting up furniture, or unpacking innumerable boxes and crates.
