Pushes forward with comprehensive waste management accommodating a post-COVID-19 era

  • Create an organisation-wide drive and conduct personnel training via a dedicated curriculum, to achieve concrete waste management practices.
  • Develop data collection system, in pushing for a reform of household waste management towards a New Normal, at every PLUS-administered community.
  • Work with partners in utilising applications for managing recyclable waste, which sit well with the lifestyles of newer generations.
  • Targets a reduction of 100 tonnes of waste per year.

Ms. Naruemon Arporntanakul, Assistant Managing Director – Property Management Residential at Plus Property, the full-service professional property and facility management agency, spoke of the developments that have arisen from the COVID-19 outbreak, which had earlier triggered lockdowns of cities and social distancing.

Many organisations have had to adjust their work norms to the Work from Home (WFH) model, which has been an effective inhibitor for the spread of the disease. But if one were to look from another perspective, waste that resulted from food delivery has increased by 45% over the WFH period – this figure was yielded from PLUS’s collection of data at some 200 residential projects that were under its management nationwide.

Having continually placed importance on waste management, PLUS is making use of this opportunity by building on the data collected at each project. Follow-ups will be made and further analyses will take place, in order to give rise to concrete and comprehensive waste management measures at each project.

A goal has been set for the management personnel and the residents at each project to become involved in every relevant process, so as to foster a shared understanding and spur on a new normal that will have positive, long-term effects on the society and the environment.

With the starting point being Plus Property’s collaboration with Sansiri in applying safe and sustainable waste sorting at residential projects within the T77 Community, making a prototype ‘green community’ out of T77, PLUS looks forward to expanding on its work in administering residential projects.

This facet of PLUS’s work, known as PLUS Living Management, will have waste management implemented among the standards being employed in servicing each residential community. The implementation is aimed at fostering pleasant, liveable communities that are able to accommodate the ‘new normal’ of post-COVID-19 society, and will eventually be expanded to all projects under PLUS’s administration.

PLUS plans to build on its existing waste management practices and develop them towards full, comprehensive implementation. This will involve:

1) Providing knowledge on waste management to personnel, including personnel who have been trained via the PLUS Eduplex institute under the waste management curriculum. The aim is for personnel to possess the correct and appropriate understanding and knowledge in the handling of various types of waste.

Experts from outside agencies such as the Pollution Control Department are being invited to provide lectures on hazardous waste, waste sorting and waste handling, coinciding with the COVID-19 situation having caused the amount of hazardous or infectious waste such as surgical face masks to increase.

Knowledgeable personnel from Indorama Ventures PCL have been invited to participate in workshops with PLUS personnel to relay their knowledge about recycling and applications of PET bottles in other products, in order to promote collaboration among all parties in managing waste and to improve on the efficiency of waste management and recycling.

2) Expand implementation towards all projects managed by PLUS. A single standard for waste management will be applied to every project, and will call for the availability of waste sorting points and the collection of data for follow-up and analysis for the purpose of planning and for future expansion upon the initiative. Previously, PLUS has brought in waste sorting applications such as Gebb and Recycle Day for use at residential projects to accommodate the lifestyle demands of present day consumers. It now looks forward to developing a data collection system that would provide Big Data for continual analyses and planning.

3) Promote and encourage participations from the residents. This will be achieved by holding waste management promotion activities for the residents at each of the residential projects under the management of PLUS. Each family at a residential project is considered the starting point for contributing towards preserving and improving the Earth’s environment; activities promoting waste sorting among the residents are therefore held.

“Sustainable reduction of waste has to start from the small social unit of the household. If we are able to create a mindset for the members of a family by providing them with the correct knowledge and by relaying the knowledge through tangible and easy to understand mediums, it will enable an expansion towards society as a whole.

When everybody views the changes as truly beneficial, the behaviors of people in society will gradually shift and ultimately result in a New Normal. In its capacity as caretaker for some 200 communities, PLUS has continually implemented waste management policies and the programs that were implemented have been shown to repeatedly help reduce the amount of waste at each project. This year, we are targeting a reduction of 100 tonnes per year, equivalent to a reduction of 75,000 kgCO2 in carbon monoxide emissions”, said Naruemon
